2023 Kahu o Ka ʻĀina
Suzanne Case
Hawaiʻi Land Trust is pleased to announce that Suzanne Case will be recognized as our 2023 Kahu o ka ʻĀina. Each year, the Mālama ʻĀina Kākou event honors a person, group, or organization that has made a substantial impact in conservation and sustainability in Hawaiʻi.
“Ms. Case has created lasting change for the ʻāina through her more than 35 years of tireless efforts to enhance the protection and stewardship of Hawai‘i’s watersheds, forests, reef systems, and native species,” said ‘Olu Campbell, President and CEO of HILT. “Communities across the state will be better for generations to come due to her ability to touch so many aspects of land management and conservation.”
Born in Hilo and raised in Hilo and Honolulu, Case is the former Chair and Director of the State’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), where she served from 2015-2022, stewarding 1.3 million acres of public lands, including forests, parks, streams, cultural sites, fisheries, coral reefs, and ocean recreation. She previously was the Hawai‘i and Palmyra Atoll Program Executive Director at The Nature Conservancy in Honolulu from 2001-2015 and served as the organization’s Western and Asia/Pacific Regional Counsel from 1987-2001. She was also an attorney at the Pettit & Martin law firm in San Francisco practicing real estate law from 1983-1987. Case earned her J.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, and her bachelor’s degree with honors from Stanford University.
Case has been recognized with the 2019 Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance Distinguished Service Award, the 2017 Garden Club of America Club Conservation Commendation, and the 2014 Hawai‘i Community Foundation and W.A. Gerbode Foundation Ho‘okele Nonprofit Leadership Award, and the 2009 YWCA Leader Award, among other awards.
Major DLNR accomplishments under her leadership include overseeing more than 20 collaborative land acquisition projects, the restoration of a quarter million native trees in Hawai‘i, the eradication of rats on Lehua Island to support native species, the implementation of instream water flow protections and renewable energy initiatives, improved State Park management, enhanced food security and biosecurity, and the protection of marine resources, native forests, and watersheds.

Henry Kapono is the 2021 Favorite Entertainer of the Year and a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, thrilling performer, audience favorite—and multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination. He has taken home 21 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Best EP, Compilation of the Year, and is the recipient of the 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards for Contemporary Album of the Year for his latest album, Henry’s House, and the 2021 Favorite Entertainer of the Year.
Kapono continues to perform live worldwide and is known for his legendary “Dukes on Sunday” afternoon Beach concerts on Waikīkī beach. Running over 3 decades strong, Dukes on Sunday is also streamed live to tens of thousands of people worldwide each Sunday from 5p to 6p HST on the Henry Kapono Facebook Page.
