HILT seeks Kāhili Beach Preserve Educator & Steward
Hawaiian Islands Land Trust is currently hiring a Kāhili Beach Preserve Educator & Steward. Applications must be submitted by January 25th, 2020.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Position to start in January or February 2020! Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT) is looking for an educator and steward to lead HILT’s ʻāina-based education and ʻāina stewardship efforts at Kāhili Beach Preserve, Kīlauea, Kauaʻi, owned and managed by Hawaiian Islands Land Trust. 19-40 hours/week. This position will play an integral role in the organizational strength of our nonprofit land trust. Hawaiian Islands Land Trust is Hawaiʻi’s islands-wide land trust with a mission to protect the lands that sustain us for current and future generations. We are a Hawaiʻi 501c3 nonprofit, and a nationally accredited land trust. HILT has protected over 21,000 acres throughout the islands, including Hawaiian cultural landscapes, working farms and ranches, and coastlines. Established in 2011 as a merger of four land trusts on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, HILT now owns and stewards 6 preserves, holds and monitors 40 conservation easements, is actively working to protect additional special places throughout Hawaiʻi, and connects residents and visitors to ʻāina through education and managed public access.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide regular (almost daily) management of Kāhili Beach Preserve. Walk the property, appropriately address any behavior and activities not in line with HILT’s stewardship of the preserve, monitor ongoing concerns such as erosion, marine debris, and invasive species, and lead land management projects to address those concerns and improve the native coastal ecosystem.
• Engage and coordinate schedules with regular Kāhili volunteers to establish a daily monitoring presence at Kāhili.
• Regularly communicate with other HILT staff as needed to provide regular updates and status reports, utilize land stewardship and place-based education expertise of other HILT staff, and share successes and challenges.
• Coordinate and lead monthly community volunteer days with regular Kāhili volunteer group (currently the 1st Sunday of every month from 8:30-10:30am), and provide supplies as needed.
• Host educational field trips for school and community groups.
• Respectfully engage stakeholders (neighbors, Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, Kiaʻi Kāhili, Hawaiian cultural practitioners, community leaders, involved community groups, beach goers, surfers, fishers, and elected officials) about proposed stewardship projects at Kāhili Beach Preserve, and find workable solutions where concerns arise.
• Conduct outreach to area schools, and work with area educators to build Kāhili-based curriculum that fulfills the school’s requirements.
• Annually monitor Kāhili Beach Preserve using HILT’s land management software. • Timely meet Kāhili-specific grant deliverables.
• Lead or oversee any research or studies that need to be done such as drafting a biological survey of plants and animals on the Preserve, working with the State Historic Preservation Division to care for archaeological sites on the Preserve, monitoring water quality, or documenting oral history of those knowledgable about Kāhili’s past use.
• Periodically review HILT’s Strategic Plan with HILT’s CEO, and work with HILT’s CEO, staff, Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and Island Councils to revise the Plan as needed.
• Attend regular meetings and assist with coordination of Kiaʻi Kāhili, an initiative supported by 5 organizations to foster community stewardship of all of Kāhili; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT), Kīlauea Neighborhood Association (KNA), Kīlauea Point Natural History Association (KPNHA) and ʻĀina Hoʻokupu o Kīlauea (AHK). The Kāhili Community Stewardship Area includes Kāhili Beach Preserve owned by HILT (Waiakalua/Wailapa side), and the Kāhili Quarry area on the western side of Kīlauea River owned by USFWS (Kīlauea side).
• Work collaboratively with USFWS and the other Kiaʻi Kāhili partners to improve stewardship of Kāhili and cooperatively address any issues.
• Attend regular HILT Kauaʻi Island Council meetings to share Kāhili progress and issues.
• Attend and present at HILT quarterly Board meetings as requested by HILT’s CEO.
• Prepare outreach materials and a table display with Kāhili and HILT info.
• Conduct outreach on behalf of HILT at local fairs and events, and at HILT events.
• Fundraising for continued stewardship of Kāhili and HILT’s other Kauaʻi lands, and the protection of other threatened significant places on Kauaʻi.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Highly knowledgable about the North Shore of Kauaʻi, the Kīlauea ahupuaʻa, and Kāhili in particular. Knowlegable about Kāhiliʻs uses and fuction in ancient times, during the plantation era, and today. Knowledgable about Kīlauea and Kāhiliʻs past and present cultural and natural resources.
• Community project management experience. Ability to lead a community project from start to finish, with a high level of community consultation and involvment at all steps of the project.
• Two+ years of experience in land stewardship. In particular, experience planting and caring for native Hawaiian plants, and removing invasive plants.
• Experience teaching youth or comparable experience providing education in a community setting. Land-based education preferred.
• Strong communication skills.
• Community engagement experience and skills. Ability to increase collaborative community stewardship of Kāhili by working well with, and bringing together, many stakeholder groups who use Kāhili.
• Passion for the mission of Hawaiian Islands Land Trust.
• Comfortable with interisland travel.
• Valid Hawaiʻi driver’s license and driving ability on uneven dirt roads. • Comfortable walking on Kāhili Beach Preserve’s uneven terrain.
• Some knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s State and County land use laws.
